system failure at 7am

I suspect my internal OS is running on a pirated version of Windows 95, which would explain why I can't open more than one 'emotional stability' window at a time without the whole thing crashing.

how can people be this fresh and productive as soon as they wake up? i watch them move through the early hours with a terrifying, coherent grace. they do light mobility work, they hydrate with room-temperature lemon water, and they write down three hyper-specific things they are grateful for in journals bound in vegan leather. i look at them and i genuinely need to know how they operate, because for me, consciousness is not a gentle sunrise. it is an immediate, chaotic frenzy before my feet even hit the floor.

my day doesn't begin with a quiet stretch. it begins like a 200 bpm round of subway surfers. the second my eyelids slide open, the game is already live. there is no loading screen, no main menu, no gentle press start. i am already mid-sprint, an aggressive bassline is pulsing directly behind my eyes, and i am desperately swiping left, swiping right, sliding under barrier walls, and collecting urgent tasks just to bank enough points to survive.

if i stop moving for more than four seconds, the inspector catches me. the inspector is my mom, and her dog is her terrifying, unprovoked morning energy. she is actively pursuing me with fast voice notes, aggressive questions about breakfast, and reminders for household chores i have successfully evaded since 2022.

people speak about morning routines as if they are delicate artistic compositions. mine is an unscheduled disaster. my brain’s rom simply refuses to send basic instructions to my arms and legs until the central power supply hits a critical threshold. it is the only accurate way to describe the glitchy, low-power state of my physical body at 7:30 am.

so i reach for coffee. i dump high-voltage caffeine straight into the engine block to force a hard reset. it works, in a way, but it just overclocks a fried engine. coffee spawns twice as many oncoming trains, turns the whole screen neon red, doubles the game speed, and keeps me sprinting through my high-stress 45-minute window before i log into society. fifteen minutes for stumbling into doorframes and thirty minutes spent dodging my mom's childhood household rituals with olympic agility.

the pause button doesn't come until late at night. i didn't sit down with a pastel notion template and map out an optimized evening wellness protocol. i don't drink green tea at night for the antioxidants, health benefits, or any polite wellness culture nonsense. it just somehow became a mindless, hard-wired habit, an accidental emergency patch deployed during a month of total cognitive collapse.

green tea, bitter and steaming and aggressively sensible, turned out to be the only chemical compound capable of forcing my internal operating system to stop stuttering after twelve hours of running. coffee starts the engine, but green tea carries the exact energy of a severe librarian slamming a heavy encyclopedia shut in a quiet room.

my green tea mug has a soft little illustration of a girl sitting on a bench, reading a book under a tree. it looks utterly ridiculous sitting next to my glowing monitor and my sprawling desk-pile of unresolved night-time panic. but that ceramic cup has become an actual physical firewall in my daily reality.

when i wrap my hands around it at night, my brain doesn't look at it and think self-care. it doesn't start composing a poem about mindfulness. it looks at the warm mug, lets out a long-overdue system exhaust, and thinks: oh, thank god. the game is paused.

i don't know if this is healthy. i don't know if it is a legitimate psychological grounding mechanism or just another fragment of junk code i have hard-wired into my operating system. all i know is that the second that sharp, scalding heat hits my palms and the first bitter note lands on my tongue, the trains stop rushing past. the floating coins freeze in mid-air. the screeching music cuts out.

i am still at the same chaotic desk. i am still in the same unmade room. the dusty mountain of things i avoided today is still standing right there, fully prepared to consume my morning tomorrow.

but for the exact duration of one cup of tea at night, the infinite runner is on hold. i am, for the first time all day, not dodging anything. i am not sprinting. i am just a person sitting in a dark room, holding hot water.

and, honestly? that is all the victory i can handle before bed.

You heard me, now tell me, What’s your weirdest, most accidental morning ritual?,
